Alan Hunter Wedding Photography photographer in Poole Dorset

Alan Hunter's photographic mission began in the early eighties in his native northeast. A student at the Spectro Arts facility and Newcastle Media Workshop, in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, he fine-tuned the black and white developing techniques, standing him in good stead today as one of the countries leading monochrome artists.

Photographically, this period saw Alan develop a gritty documentary approach to his subject, involving people typically interacting with their environment. Acutely aware of the effect of the post-industrial era on Tyneside, an area previously dependent upon heavy industry, mining and fishing, his first exhibition records the remnants of this once flourishing region. Photographs of cloth-caped locals reveling in a game of dominoes evoke echoes of a culture now in decline.
The transition to professional photographer took place in 1992, following a move to the south coast. This necessitated a sea change in Alan's output - documentary photography evolving into portraiture, advertising and commercial commissions.
The intervening years witnessed a rapid development of the business, culminating in winning the Ilford-sponsored Black and White Master Photographer Of The Year Award in 1999 with a fine nude study, shown here on the left, which is now a successful limited edition print.
Presently operating from his fashionable studio in Poole, Dorset, Alan Hunter is one of the countries most highly acclaimed photographers, boasting celebrities, actors and business executives in his client portfolio. Limited editions and other prints are still produced by hand on the premises, under the scrutiny of his unfailing eye for detail.
Success has enabled Alan to return to his favoured medium of black and white in a big way, and he is constantly refreshing his approach. The most recent on going project has seen a return to his beloved documentary style, with a series of studies of fishermen of the Indian sub-continent. This series will form the basis for a touring exhibition or book. Alan is also preparing a series of Black and White workshops in his studio, for many levels of ability.
